USDA Forest Service offers information on using recreational areas of the national forest

SUSANVILLE, Calif., August 22, 2020 – National forests in California are experiencing an increase in recreational use due to COVID-19, which has resulted in large amounts of litter and human waste left throughout the forests. The USDA Forest Service would like to advise all visitors of some crucial information on what you can do to reduce the amount of trash left behind in the forest.
  • Each citizen has the responsibility to do their part to keep our forests clean.
  • Excess amounts of litter can lead to additional fuel for wildfires and is an eyesore to those visiting after you leave.
    • If you can pack it in, you can pack it out.
    • Always leave your campsite cleaner than you found it.
    • Litter left behind can create hazardous conditions for frontline firefighters.
  • While using dispersed campsites or utilizing the ATV / UTV trails, remember that “Leave No Trace” also pertains to human waste.
    • Bury human waste if there is no available restroom.
“The aesthetics and cleanliness of the forests should remain a priority for all user groups. Together we can all do our part to keep our forests clean and beautiful,” states Deb Bumpus, Forest Supervisor, Lassen National Forest.
