Techwise Family Nights, sponsored by High Sierras Family Resource Center in Loyalton, were two separate events with attendees having to pre-register. The goal of the events was to learn about safe technology.
Night one on Wednesday, February 28th, took place at Loyalton Elementary School with the cafeteria filled to capacity. Dinner was served by Frogs-ty’s prior to the program. It was geared to parents of children, ages 0 through 6th grade. Sierra Kids provided childcare for the little ones, 5 and under.
Night two on Thursday, February 29th, was held in the high school gym with tables set for a barbecue dinner, served by Farmhouse Café. The evening was more indepth, geared to parents of middle and high school students, “without four-year-olds running around.”
Vicki Clark, Executive Director of High Sierras Family Resource Center, opened the sessions and told how her sister, as a counselor and she as a social worker, have been working over 30 years in the business and watched how quickly technology came up. She stated, “Technology is everywhere,” and told how it impacts every part of our lives. A group representing health and human services agencies have looked at data, surveys and heath assessment needs and agreed it is a priority topic. Vicki stated families are the “heart and soul of communities.”
Vicki introduced her “beautiful sister, the extrovert,” Elizabeth Clark who helped begin family conversations about how screen time and social media sites are interfering with well-being, particularly with children’s. Elizabeth has been a mental health therapist for children, teens, and their families for decades. She began noting some of the negative aspects of technology use eight years ago and has been keeping up with the latest research and trends since then. She is currently working as a consultant for a school district in Colorado and focuses on healthy and powerful technology use for students, staff, and families.
On Night Two, she introduced a “family plan,” told of ways to improve and empower ourselves in the use of technology and introduced simple, effective and fun ways for families to moderate and support kids to get the best out of their tech use.
