GRASSHOPPER MANAGEMENT was discussed at the Sierra Valley Resource Conservation meeting August 8th held at Sierraville School.
Residents who regularly drive A-24 are well aware of the infestation which created total carnage on vehicles. It was especially bad with Loyalton residents being told to save water and not wash cars. Spraying helped eliminate grasshoppers along A-24 but they increased along Highway 49 between Loyalton and Vinton and then moved to Heriot Lane although not as bad.
At the meeting it was called “a big project taking up the bulk of time.” There was mention of car washes. It was stated they couldn’t get everyone to spray and noted it’s not over with them “still flying around” and it was hoped to get other people’s attention. Director Rick Roberti stated “no one knows how much those little ones can eat until they’re in your field.” Under question about the spraying, Rick said they were three weeks late. It was agreed they should hold a meeting in February or March 2023 before the next outbreak so they can be ready, update permits and discuss options.
