Reclamation Announces Safety of Dams Modification Project and Stampede Dam Temporary Road Closure

4/3/2017

CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Reclamation is restarting Safety of Dams work at Stampede Dam. Reclamation is raising the crest of Stampede Dam by 11.5 feet to limit outflows during large flood events. Stampede Dam and Reservoir, part of Reclamation’s Truckee Storage Project, are located on the Little Truckee River about 6 miles east of Truckee, California, and 27 miles west of Reno, Nevada.

Reclamation will close the section of Dog Valley Road over the dam starting on Monday, April 10, 2017. The extent of the road closure will be from the intersection of Stampede Meadows Road and Dog Valley Road to the Emigrant Group Campground entrance on Dog Valley Road. The road closure will remain in place until construction is completed in October 2018.
Public access to Stampede Reservoir will be available from a detour route via State Highway 89 to Hobart Mills Road to Dog Valley Road (see map). The unpaved segment of Dog Valley Road, starting at the Russell Valley community to the Stampede Boat Ramp road, has been improved to better facilitate public access to Stampede Reservoir. The Stampede Boat Ramp and Logger Campground will remain open during construction, and the reservoir operations will not change for construction. The Emigrant Group Campground will be closed for the 2017 season, which starts on May 20 and will be re-opened for the 2018 season.
For additional information about the road closure, please contact Todd Hill at 916-978-5328 (TTY 800-877-8339) or [email protected] or visit http://www.usbr.gov/mp/sod/projects/stampede/index.html.
