March 14-19, Loyalton FFA attended the State Leadership Conference in Ontario, California. The students learned about water and the California Water Wars starting in 1913 with Mr. William Mulholland using all the water from Owens Lake so in 1941 water that fed Mono Lake which was diverted into the aqueduct to send to the growing population of the Los Angeles area. Between 1974-1994 Mr. Gaines and the Mono Lake Committee were engaged in litigation with Los Angeles to stop the diversion. Loyalton FFA traveled down to Ontario with Butte Valle-Doris FFA viewing other sites along the way including the Japanese American Enterment Camp that was the bases of the book “Farwell the Manzanar.” While at the conference, the students attended sessions with speakers, awards, competitions, business sessions for the two voting delegates, and the witnessed the installment of this year’s state officer team. Loyalton FFA also had the opportunity to tour the Long Beach Aquarium, attend the career/college expo, and leadership workshops. Everyone made new connections and were able to visit old friends!
