WARNING: Senator Ted Gaines (Ret.) now Board of Equalization’s First District member, wrote a warning of layoffs in the insurance industry, “dire for the entire state economy.”
He suggests repealing Proposition 103, the 1988 initiative governing property insurance in California to free up insurance companies to use whatever information they can to set their rates.
Lost Sierra Chamber of Commerce made this a discussion at their November 1st meeting, including CA Fair Plan rates and “the ability to get insurance which is affecting people and businesses coming to live or choosing to leave Plumas and Sierra Counties.” That Chamber is in a conversation with Kevin Kiley's office since these Fair Plan policies are now affecting his entire district including the Valley. Chamber Board member Mark Pecotich also attempted to make contact with regional State Insurance Commissioner Rep, Durriya Syed, to discuss the CA Fair Plan with their group but had not received a reply yet.
Lost Sierra Chamber shared discounts for hardening dwelling properties against wildfire risk which may help us all:
Protecting the Structure Discount: Reduces the wildfire portion of the policy’s premium by 10%.
• Dwelling must have a Class-A Fire Rated Roof (composition shingle, stone, concrete/clay tile, or Metal).
• Six inches at the bottom of all exterior walls must be made of non-combustible material.
• Vents must be ember and fire resistant (wire mesh covering).
• Windows must be double paned.
• Eaves must be enclosed.
Protecting the Immediate Surroundings Discount:
Reduces the wildfire portion of the policy’s premium by 5%.
• Vegetation and debris must be cleared from under the decks.
• There must be an ember resistant zone maintained within five feet of the home.
• There must be no combustible sheds or outbuildings within 30 feet of the dwelling.
• Defensible space compliance (including trimming trees, removal of brush and debris from yard in compliance with California Public Resources Code 4291).
According to California FAIR PLAN,
“These measures are GOOD NEWS for California residents and by encouraging widespread adoption of fire mitigation measures, we should in time reduce the overall risk associated with insuring properties in high wildfire prone areas. A step in the right direction!”
