On September 3rd, 2020 at approximately 12:22 p.m., a 14-year-old male was driving a 2017 Maserati eastbound on I-80 west of Donner Pass Rd. at over 100 m.p.h. A 15-year-old female was seated in the right front seat. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it impacted the guardrail south of the roadway. The metal guardrail was projected through the right front passenger’s door into the vehicle’s cabin. The vehicle then rapidly caught on fire. The driver exited the vehicle with severe burns. The passenger was able to exit but collapsed near the front of the burning vehicle due to her injuries. An off-duty police officer with the Redwood City Police Department stopped at the collision scene to render assistance. The officer dragged the severely injured passenger away from the fully engulfed vehicle to a safe location. Personnel from the Truckee Fire Department transported the injured parties to two Careflight Air ambulance helicopters that landed on the freeway. Careflight transported the parties to the UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. Alcohol/drugs are not a factor in this collision.
