On August 12, 2022 at approximately 9:30 pm., Angelo Yescas, 18, of Rio Linda, CA was traveling westbound in an 2001 Acura TL on SR-70, just west of the Grizzly Dome tunnel. A witness estimated Yescas’s speed just prior to the crash between 80-100 mph. While navigating a right hand corner, Yescas lost control of the Acura and veered to the right, colliding with a metal guard rail on the north shoulder. The Acura continued out of control across both lanes and collided with a rock/concrete barrier on the south shoulder. The collision with the rock/concrete barrier caused the Acura to overturn onto its roof. A passerby contacted 911 once in service and Quincy CHP, Plumas County Sheriff’s Office and Jarbo Gap Cal-Fire responded to the scene. Several bystanders pulled Yescas from the vehicle and stayed with him until emergency personnel arrived. Yescas was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and sustained major injuries as a result of this collision. Yescas was transported by ambulance to a safe landing zone, where he was then transported by helicopter to Enloe Medical Center for treatment.

On August 13, 2020 at approximately 1500 hours, Kristin D. Whiteaker, 39, of Yuba City was driving her 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle, westbound on SR-70, just west of Soda Creek Road. Whiteaker was traversing through a left hand curve in the roadway and collided into a rock that was in the westbound lane. The collision with the rock caused Whiteaker to drive out of control. The Harley Davidson motorcycle drove towards the north shoulder and Whiteaker and the Harley Davidson overturned onto the north shoulder. Whiteaker suffered major injuries as a result of the collision and was flown to Renown Medical Center. Whiteaker was wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the collision.
