The first competition is for Pumpkin Pie on November 14, 2023.
The first-ever Best of Plumas competition was a huge success! Dozens of residents brought in their meatloaf, bread, carrot cake, soup, cookies and cornbread. Competition was fierce and creativity was high. Six champions walked away with ribbons, plaques and gift cards. Let’s do it again!
Of course, the Plumas Sierra County Fair exists to judge all that our community has made, raised and grown, but these are particular things that seem to get folks bragging about the most. We want to find out who makes the best in each of this season’s categories; pumpkin pie, fruit cake, chicken noodle soup, dipping salsa, biscuits and mac & cheese. Six competitions in all. It's free to enter and the winner of each competition will receive an authentic “Best of” rosette ribbon, a commemorative plaque and a $100 gift certificate from Sav Mor Foods in Quincy.
The competition is simple; 6 non-expert judges will taste each entry and give it a score between 1 and 10 (10 being the best). They do not compare dishes, they only rate each dish on it’s own merits. At the end of the judging, we add up the scores and whichever dish got the most points, wins the Best of Plumas. Basic guidelines can be found on the fair website, but any interpretation of a dish can be entered. However, if the judges are expecting a biscuit to be the kind you put gravy on and yours is a British tea biscuit, that will probably be reflected in the score. We think it’s obvious what we are looking for.
Something new this year! By popular demand, we are asking everyone who enters to bring a written copy of their recipe so we can create a Best of Plumas cookbook. We have some from last season’s competition and will add the recipes from this season to make something special. Plans are to make this a fundraising effort for the PSCF Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports the fair and is co-sponsor of this event with Sav Mor Foods. The folks at Sav Mor have been fantastic partners in supporting and promoting this event and we are thrilled to have them continue as part of the Best of Plumas!
It's simple to enter; get an entry form off the Fair website (www.plumas-sierracountyfair.net), or pick one up at Sav Mor Foods or the Fair Office. Fill out the usual name and contact information, pick which competitions you want to be a part of and either drop it off at the Fair Office, or bring it in with your first competition. Directions are on the form, and the website. All entries will be dropped off at the Fair Office at the Plumas Sierra County Fairgrounds on the day of the competitions between 4pm and 5:30pm. Closed judging will begin at around 6pm and the winner will be announced on Facebook when the results are tabulated.

This is your chance to leave a legacy in Plumas County that will last for eternity, or at least until we have another competition and someone knocks you off the podium!
