You just can’t talk about a county fair without sharing memories. Maybe it was a first kiss, or maybe it was throwing up after riding the Tilt-A-Whirl, either one will live with you your whole life. The Plumas Sierra County Fair is that kind of a touchstone for thousands of residents who have walked through the front gates over the past 84 years. New memories will continue to be made year after year and that’s why the Plumas Sierra County Fair Board decided to celebrate that fact with the 2024 theme of “Mountains of Memories”. This year’s Fair will happen July 25 through July 28, 2024.
Pictures speak a thousand words and ever since the invention of the camera, photos have been a cornerstone of preserving memories. Anyone who visited Disneyland in the 50’s and 60’s will recall the Kodak Photo Spots. Here we are in the 2000’s and the Disneyland of Plumas County will do kind of the same thing. At the 2024 Plumas Sierra County Fair, visitors will find loads of photo opportunities in the form of a selfie museum and dozens of decorated picture frames scattered around the grounds.
The first ever selfie museum in Plumas County will be located in the Tulsa Scott Pavilion and will offer creative and timely backdrops where you can insert yourself as part of the Olympics, appear to run for elected office, or be a circus performer. Take some fun snapshots and then post them to social media as #PSCFairFace for the world to see the memories you are making.
In recent years, community members have had the chance to “adopt” wooden pigs, chickens and fish, and then decorate them for display at the Fair. This year, folks can pay $5 to receive a foam board frame that can be shaped and decorated any way they want. Those frames will be displayed at various locations around the fairgrounds where people can take selfies of their faces surrounded by the dozens of custom frames and again, post the images to #PSCFairFace. Check the Fair website or Facebook for details.
There will be a great line-up of entertainment at the 2024 Fair, including a free country concert featuring up and coming artist Caleb Montgomery. That will be Friday evening, July 26 at 8:00pm on the West Lawn by the Fred & Sharon Surber Family Gardens. Another new event will happen on Saturday evening in the Grandstands; flat track motorcycle racing. Sunday night will see the return of the annual Fair Auto Racing.
There will be live music on the Plumas Bank Stage in Old Town every night except for Sunday. Déjà Vu performs Thursday, Back 40 on Friday and Rummy on Saturday night. Have a beer or margarita and dance the night away. There will be lots of music and magic every day of the Fair along with Puppet Shows and the Almost World Famous Swan Brothers Circus. The Mineral Building will host Eye Ventures; a carefully curated collection of adventures for your eyes! An amazing display of mind-bending optical illusions to delight the whole family. Wold Amusements will be back with a full carnival and details for presale Golden Tickets and Day Passes are also on the website. Look for a great selection of food vendors and lots of clothing, jewelry, and toy sellers. Even the Ol’ Fishin’ Hole will return where youngsters will have a chance to dip a fishing line into the pond and catch trout. Now that’s a memory!
Of course, what makes a fair a fair is the competitive exhibits. The Fair urges everyone to consider entering something into the Fair; jelly, jerky, photos, collections, vegetables and even house plants! There are hundreds of things that can be entered with a chance to win ribbons and cash. Exhibit guides list everything and can be picked up at Plumas Bank branches, libraries or the Fair Office. It can also be downloaded off the Fair website: www.plumas-sierracountyfair.net. It’s easy to do and is the best way to support your local Fair.
Plan on taking some time to walk through the livestock barns and enjoy the animals our local youth have worked so hard on. The annual Junior Livestock Auction will take place on Sunday, July 28 at 9am. Consider coming and purchasing some high-quality meat for your freezer.
If you want to step up the Fair Experience, consider volunteering at this year’s event. The Fair needs people to help clerk for judges, monitor buildings for a couple hours during the Fair, and help out with dozens of other tasks. Most of the jobs involve hanging around air-conditioned buildings and visiting with friends while you make sure visitors don’t eat the vegetables on display or touch the quilts! The pay is nothing but the memories are priceless!
The website is a great resource for information about this year’s Fair with information as it becomes available. Up to the minutes announcements will be made on Facebook as well. The Plumas Sierra County Fair is looking forward to being part of everyone’s memories yet again.
