(Tahoe/Truckee, Calif.) –  Tahoe Forest Health System (TFHS) encourages community members in Truckee and North Tahoe to stay current on recommended vaccines to protect themselves, their families, and our region.
Why Vaccines Matter
Vaccines are a proven way to prevent illness, protect vulnerable community members, and reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Immunizations are important at every age, from infancy through adulthood. Adults also need routine vaccines. If you or your child are behind on recommended vaccines, TFHS can help create a safe, personalized catch-up plan.

How Vaccines Work and Their Safety
Vaccines work by safely training the immune system to recognize and fight infections. Mild side effects like a sore arm or low fever are normal signs of this response. All vaccines undergo extensive testing and ongoing safety monitoring to ensure they remain safe and effective.

Some vaccines include very small amounts of aluminum to boost protection, far less than what people naturally ingest through food or water.

Decades of research involving millions of people show no link between vaccines and autism. Autism is shaped by genetic and developmental factors, and increased awareness and screening explain rising diagnoses.

Childhood & Teen Vaccines
Following the recommended vaccine schedule helps protect children at the ages when they are most vulnerable. Pediatric vaccines begin at birth and continue through adolescence. These vaccines guard against serious illnesses such as measles, whooping cough, meningitis, and more. Staying on schedule also helps protect newborns and community members with weakened immune systems.

If your child has fallen behind, providers use well-established “catch-up” guidelines to safely bring them up to date.

Adult Vaccines
Adults benefit from routine immunizations throughout life. Key vaccines include seasonal COVID-19 and influenza vaccines, tetanus boosters, HPV vaccination through age 26, and shingles and pneumococcal vaccination beginning around age 50. Additional vaccines - such as MMR, varicella, hepatitis A and B, meningococcal, and RSV- may be advised based on age, medical conditions, immunity, and individual risk factors.

If you’re unsure which vaccines you’ve received, bring your immunization record to your next appointment for review.

Vaccines During Pregnancy
Vaccination during pregnancy helps protect both parent and baby. Recommended immunizations include Tdap during each pregnancy (ideally in the third trimester), seasonal RSV vaccination between September and January, and influenza and COVID-19 vaccines during any trimester of their respective seasons.

Live vaccines are not given during pregnancy but may be administered before or after. Partners and household members should also stay up to date to help protect newborns.
