California: In the final pre-election poll out today from the UC Berkeley Institute for Governmental Studies, Yes on Proposition 36 leads by a more than two to one margin amongst likely voters.
In response, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has issued the following statement:
“In poll after poll over these past few months, Californians of every ideological background have voiced overwhelming support for Proposition 36 because it will be an important step forward in addressing California’s retail theft, homelessness and fatal drug overdose epidemics.
While Sacramento politicians have mounted a barrage of eleventh-hour attacks against this common-sense public safety measure, it is clear that voters are ready to stop the suffering on our streets. By providing communities with the legal tools they need to compel more addicts into treatment and ensure more accountability for serial thieves, Prop. 36 will be far more compassionate, cost effective and fiscally responsible over the long term than current law.
Over the past several months, hundreds of city and county leaders—most of them Democrats and Independents—have joined our campaign because they are determined to save lives, protect small businesses, shrink the theft tax being paid by working families across our state, and ultimately help get more of our unhoused neighbors indoors.
That’s the brighter future that Proposition 36 makes possible. And it’s why we are encouraging all of our neighbors to join us in voting Yes on Proposition 36 next Tuesday.”
