CA FISH & WILDLIFE has been on patrol in Sierra Valley, on the lookout for wolves.
On July 16th, was a report of a wolf problem at Sierra Valley Ranch and Fish & Game was notified along with a second report of a wolf problem in Sierraville. A third report east of Sierraville was a possible wolf depredation at a ranch off A23. During the investigation, two additional dead calves were discovered at a nearby ranch east of Sierraville. One of the kills was determined to be a probable wolf depredation, while the other was confirmed. DNA samples were collected from the confirmed kill and later transferred to the Sheriff’s Office.
On July 18th, during a follow-up related to a confirmed wolf depredation east of Sierraville, it was reported two additional calves were attacked in the same pasture. Sheriff’ Office collected DNA swabs from the rancher. That same day, a confirmed wolf depredation of a calf occurred on a ranch in the Lemon Canyon area of Sierraville. The USDA trapper conducted the investigation and the individual responsible fore the cattle turned over two DNA swabs to the Sheriffs Office.
On July 19th, at A24 near Marble Hot Springs, the USDA trapper confirmed it was a wolf kill on a calf.
IT’S NOT JUST WOLVES. Report of a bear problem on Mountain Quail Road in Calpine was given July 15 and on Main Street twice on July 16 and again July 19 and on Aspen Court July 20.
