CANDIDATE INTERVIEWS for the Board Trustee vacancy for Area #2 were held in Downieville on June 11th during the joint meeting of the Sierra County Board of Education and the Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District Governing Board. The two candidates, Rhynie Hollitz and Laura Cueto, were both from Sierraville. Rhynie Hollitz taught agriculture for 28 years, has an administrative credential and was a school and district administrator before retiring with his wife of 51 years to his ranch in Sierraville. Rhynie enjoys serving the community and has been involved in community activities, organizations and church. He also served on the Sierraville Public Utility District. Rhynie has been on a school board before and it was an experience he really enjoyed. He feels he is a likeable person and gets along with people. He’s a good listener and tries to respect people’s points of view and to be somewhat analytical. He believes in playing as a team and feels it is the only way to work together.
Laura Cueto has over 40 years of experience in the business sector. She has been coming to Sierraville since 1988 when she first met her husband Paul. The couple moved to Sierraville seven years ago and has volunteered on many events. She was interested in serving on the Board because she has always loved the way life is for children in Sierra County. Having lived in a city, she sees the difference and wants to help keep that way of life. She’s very analytical, loves children and wants parents to be able to raise their children here.
Board President Kelly Champion stated they had two excellent candidates and felt they would both have good input on the board. She stated the Board collectively doesn’t have a lot of experience, so she was leaning toward Rhynie. District Superintendent Sean Snider added there was a huge learning curve and liked that Rhynie had been an interim superintendent. Champion stated it was a hard decision to make but felt they could benefit greatly from Rhynie’s many years of experience as an administrator and educator. Laura agreed with their decision.
Board trustee Richard Jaquez made the motion to appoint Rhynie Hollitz who was appointed unanimously. He was given the Oath of Office by Snider and then joined the board for the rest of the meeting.
