STORM DAMAGE from storms February 16-20th was reported on during the Sierra County Board of Supervisors’ meeting held March 3rd in Downieville. Interim Public Works Director and Building and Planning Director Brandon Pangman stated they gave out three red tags on damaged structures, adding it was fortunate they were not occupied and the property owners were notified.
Pangman praised PG&E who made tremendous efforts and replaced whole sections and multiple poles. He also recognized the Sierra County Road Crew who worked extremely long hours and did a “tremendous job” despite equipment problems.

Eric Jackson Appointed Sierra County Assessor

At its regular meeting in Downieville on March 3, the Sierra County Board of Supervisors appointed Eric Jackson to fill the unexpired term of the vacant Sierra County Assessor position. The vacancy was created by the retirement of longtime Assessor Laura Marshall.
Jackson is a longtime Sierra County resident, having lived in the county for 34 years. A graduate of Downieville High School, he and his wife purchased their home in Sierra County in 2014. Their daughter also recently graduated from Downieville High School last year.
Jackson has been working in the Sierra County Assessor’s Office since 2010 and brings significant experience to the role. He was a mathematics major in college, and loves numbers. In his time with the office, Jackson has completed thousands of property appraisals and taken more than 500 hours of professional training. He also regularly reviews legal and assessment codes to ensure the office remains up to date with current regulations.
The primary responsibility of the Assessor’s Office, Jackson explained, is determining the value of property throughout the county. In cases where property owners challenge an assessment, Jackson noted that the office aims to resolve issues through communication before they reach a formal hearing. He has defended assessment decisions four times before the board and successfully upheld all of them.
Looking ahead, Jackson said one of the biggest challenges facing the Assessor’s Office is its relatively new staff. Three of the four employees in the office are brand new. However, he views this as an opportunity. Jackson said he enjoys teaching and plans to support staff by setting goals and regularly checking in on their progress.
Supervisor Lee Adams emphasized the importance of the Assessor’s role in county government and noted that Sierra County has been fortunate to have strong leadership in the position. Adams also expressed appreciation for former Assessor Laura Marshall, thanking her for preparing and mentoring her successor.
Following the interview process, Assistant Clerk-Recorder Melissa Kinneer administered the oath of office to Jackson, officially swearing him in as Sierra County Assessor.
