The Plumas-Sierra County Fair occurred from Thursday, July 24th, through Sunday, July 27th. This annual event had many 4-H and FFA members participating in showing their animals, which included everything from a cavy, rabbit, chicken, pygmy goat, swine, sheep, cattle, meat goats, and even meat poultry. When showing the poultry, the 4-H and FFA members used a stuffed chicken because of the avian flu and showed it the same way they would a real chicken. Watching the Small Animal Round Showmanship was interesting, with only one pygmy goat that was shared by three or four 4-H and FFA members. This year’s fair had a lot to see and do. In the Mineral Building, a fabulous display by the Reno Gem and Mineral Society showcased a variety of rocks, fossils, shells, petrified wood, crystals, and jewelry. The kids’ favorite event was going to The Old Fishing Hole, sponsored by the Plumas Fishing and Wildlife Commission, Sierra Fish and Wildlife Commission, Trout Unlimited, Feather River College, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The kids waited all day for this event, which started a little after 3 o’clock. The Fishing and Wildlife Commission supplied the fishing poles and bait. The kids were catching lots of fish, and a good time was had by all. In the Ag Building, there was a display of the costumes that were used in the play Seussical Kids, which was performed by Drama Works at the West End Theatre last April 4th. Kudos go to John Steffinic, Fair Manager, for running a smooth and organized operation, keeping the fairgrounds clean, and keeping everyone happy.
