On June 1, 2024, at approximately 2:20 a.m., an unknown person driving a 2005 blue Pontiac Vibe southbound on SR-89 approaching Indian Falls Rd. at an unknown speed made an unsafe turning movement an lost control of the Vibe. The Vibe began a counterclockwise yaw and skidded across the northbound lane and began to rollover on the east shoulder of SR-89,. The rollover was halted by a group of trees. The Vibe came to rest facing north, tilted more than 100 degrees to its right against the trees with its right rear tire precariously balanced on a cement wall overhanging a very steep cliff leading down to Indian Creek. The unknown person exited the Vibe through the right front door and fled the scene in an unknown direction and manner. The unknown person abandoned the Vibe with its engine still running. On June 5, 2024 at approximately 4:45 a.m. Ms.Tommie E. Beard, 38 of Redding, CA was driving her 2003 black Dodge Neon PL westbound on SR-70 west of Rush Creek Rd., at an unknown speed. Ms. Beard allowed the Neon to drift out of the westbound lane, across the eastbound lane and onto the south dirt gravel shoulder of SR-70. Ms. Beard forcefully applied the Neon’s brakes, but the Neon plunged over the edge of the shoulder and began a rollover sequence on its way into the East Branch North Fork Feather River. The Neon came to rest with its front end submerged in the river facing southwest. Ms. Beard escaped the Neon and fled the scene eventually making her way back to Susanville. Ms. Beard did not contact anyone regarding the collision until June 7th at 12:58 p.m.
On June 5, 2024 at approximately 1:20 p.m. Ms. Rori G. Renfree, 23, of Greenville, CA was driving her 2009 white Ford Escape XLT westbound on SR-70 approaching Barlow Rd. at a stated 60 mph Ms. Renfree had earlier opened the hood to her engine compartment and failed to properly latch the hood when she closed it. Since Ms. Renfree failed to properly secure the Escape’s hood, it popped open while she was driving and smashed against her windshield shattering the windshield in it entirely. Ms. Renfree was able to bring the escape to a safe stop on the north shoulder of SR-70 facing west. Ms. Renfree called AAA to arrange a tow truck. Approximately 30 minutes later, CHP happened upon the scene.
