Proposed Speed Limit Increases on Highways 89 and 49 Spark Community Concerns in Sierraville

Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick, who serves the 1st Assembly District, reports that the California Department of Transportation is considering an increase to speed limits on portions of highways 89 and 49 in Sierraville. These highways serve as access routes to the southern portion of Plumas County. An increase is also proposed for Highway 49 in Sierra City.
Following recent traffic studies, said Hadwick, Caltrans has determined that the current speed limits in these areas are too low. Speed limits are typically set at the 85th percentile of actual driving speeds.
“In many Sierra County communities, state highways function as local main streets and driveways,” said Hadwick. “I’m concerned that higher speed limits could impact the tranquility and safety of these Sierra communities.” A public hearing is set for Tuesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. in the Loyalton Social Hall. More information is available online.
“I am committed to ensuring Caltrans hears residents’ voices and prioritizes community safety,” said Hadwick.
