Because all three Ranger Districts on the Plumas National Forest are planning pile burning operations across a large geographic area, with visibility and potential smoke impacting numerous communities and roads, as well as varying duration, it was less confusing to break this out into three news releases, which are attached.
Rather than sending three individual emails, consolidating it to one where you can use the information from whichever news releases are relevant to you and your area. Depending on operations tomorrow, updates may be broken out again by Ranger District.
In summary, in order from east to west –
Beckwourth Ranger District – Firefighters plan to treat approximately 170 acres of hand piles west of Plumas Pines with ignitions starting tomorrow and continuing through Friday, conditions permitting. This is generally in the same area firefighters were working on in November.
Smoke is expected to be visible in the area but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Mohawk, Johnsville, Plumas Pines, Graeagle, Blairsden and the surrounding areas. Drivers on westbound California State Highway 70 will likely see smoke.
Mount Hough Ranger District – Firefighters plan to treat approximately 42 acres of piles around the Mount Hough Ranger District office located north of Quincy on California State Highway 70, conditions permitting. Efforts are being made to minimize impacts to nearby residents and the Highway. Ignitions are expected to start tomorrow and may continue through Friday. Pile burning in the project area may continue in the coming weeks as conditions allow.
Feather River Ranger District – Firefighters are planning pile burning operations near the communities of Magalia and Challenge, with ignitions expected to start tomorrow and continue through Thursday, conditions permitting.
In Magalia firefighters plan pile burning operations on approximately 180 acres, starting with approximately 40 acres of piles in the Lucretia Unit located at Paradise Lake. If conditions are favorable, they may shift to start ignitions on approximately 17 acres of piles on National Forest System lands behind the residences located off the Skyway and Hollywood Drive.
Near Challenge, firefighters plan to work on pile burning in the Dry Creek area located near the intersection of Oregon Hill and Dry Creek roads. There are more than 200 acres of piles in the unit being treated. However, firefighters plan to ignite 10 to 20 acres per day this week depending on fuel moisture and weather. Firefighters will be working to reduce impacts to area residents and the nearby school.
During the evening smoke may settle in lower areas including Challenge and Magalia. Individuals who are smoke sensitive in these areas are advised to monitor conditions and take precautions if needed.
For all of these operations, area residents and visitors are asked to be aware of their surroundings, watch for firefighter traffic and firefighters working near roads.
