Newsom Signs Legislation to Spike Sales Tax to 11.25%

7/17/2026

Janice — ‍‍Reform California Chairman and State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio this week blasted Gov. Gavin Newsom for signing legislation that allows local politicians in Los Angeles and Contra Costa counties to push sales tax rates to 11.25%.

The new law removes existing taxpayer protections and gives local governments another way to raise costs on working families and small businesses already struggling under California’s cost-of-living crisis. DeMaio is urging voters to fight back by passing Prop 43 in November to restore the two-thirds vote requirement for local special tax increases. Read our top news story for the full breakdown.

Campaign Updates
Help Stop the Tax Hikes
Reform California continues to wage its aggressive campaign to track and defeat tax hikes. We already successfully defeated a number of proposed tax hikes on the November 2024 ballot! But now the bad news…
We still have work to do to STOP Sacramento from draining you of your hard-earned tax dollars. Here are the tax hikes we’re tracking closely and fighting in 2026: Sales Tax Hikes, Property Tax Hikes, and the Mileage Tax.
And that's not all! We also have a chance at blocking most future tax hikes by supporting a ballot measure called the Taxpayer Protection Act in 2026, which would strengthen the requirement that local tax hikes must receive two-thirds voter approval to go into effect.
Help us defeat these tax hikes! Please contribute whatever you can TODAY to help us fight these tax hikes!

Help Pass CA Voter ID
The California Voter ID Initiative has officially qualified for the November 2026 ballot — a major victory for election integrity advocates across our state.
But qualifying for the ballot is only the beginning.
Now Reform California is launching an aggressive statewide campaign to pass the measure and restore trust in our elections. The initiative would require voter ID when casting a ballot, verify the citizenship of registered voters, and require election officials to maintain accurate voter rolls.
The political establishment and special interests are already gearing up to spend millions to defeat this common-sense reform. That's why we need your help.
Polling consistently shows strong bipartisan support for Voter ID, but victory is never guaranteed. We must educate voters, counter misinformation, and build a grassroots movement in every corner of California.
Join us as we fight to pass the California Voter ID Initiative and restore confidence in our election system.
