At the May 20th Plumas County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sheriff Todd Johns announced his intent to retire from his position as Sheriff of Plumas County.
Sheriff Johns began his law enforcement career with the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office in 1991. Over the course of more than three decades, he has served the residents of this county with dedication, professionalism, and compassion. Throughout his career, he held a variety of leadership roles including Sergeant, Administrative Sergeant, and Patrol Commander. In 2019, he was appointed Sheriff and was later elected to the position in 2022.
In announcing his retirement, Sheriff Johns cited personal health reasons and a desire to focus on time with family. While the decision to step down before the end of his elected term was a difficult one, he expressed confidence in the future of the department and gratitude for the support he has received.
“Serving the people of Plumas County has been the greatest honor of my life,” said Sheriff Johns. “I’m incredibly proud of the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office and all that we’ve accomplished together. I want to thank this community for the trust and support you've given me throughout the years. While I’m stepping away from this role, I’ll always remain connected to this county and the people who make it so special.”
Sheriff Johns’ leadership has guided the agency through wildfires, emergencies, and periods of great change. His personal integrity, and commitment to public service will leave a lasting impact on the department and the community.
What's next for the Sheriff's Office and Plumas County you might ask. With Sheriff Johns’ resignation announcement, the Plumas County Board of Supervisors will be tasked with appointing a new sheriff. The process is at the discretion of the board and may include interviews or internal promotion. The board will have approximately 60 days to fill the position.
We thank Sheriff Johns for his exceptional service and wish him all the best as he begins this new chapter focused on health and family.
