The LHS Class of 2005 celebrated their 20-year reunion last Fall. To honor the milestone year, Class President, Amanda Harper, reached out to classmates requesting donations for the LHS Class of 2005 Legacy Scholarship. “My hope was to fill 50 slots with $20 donations, totaling $1000.00. That would be enough to give two decent-sized scholarships. It’s important to invest in others, and this was our way of giving back to the community where our journeys started,” says Harper. Donation efforts resulted in exceeding the goal by $40, and included donations in memoriam of three classmates who have passed away, and a donation from the LHS Class of 2007.
After consulting with LHS Principal, Cali Grffin, it was decided the scholarships would go to those pursuing education through a trade school or community college. Names of qualifying students were provided by the school, and on the night of the Senior Awards Banquet, two names were drawn out of bag in a random drawing. “I wanted to do something fun and different with our class scholarship, and the anticipation of not knowing who was going to receive the money until the actual moment of the name drawing was so fun,” said Harper. Recipients were Peyton Bellah, who will be attending Santa Barbara City College, and Brysyn Lake, who will be attending fire academy. Brysyn is the son of Rebecca (Foltz) Lake, a graduate in the Class of 2005! Harper said, “After hearing about our class scholarship, so many others have reached out asking how they can donate for next year. I originally didn’t plan to make this an annual thing, but if there is enough interest, why not? This was an easy way to support students, so I encourage other classes to fundraise in a similar way.” The LHS Class of 2005 sends best wishes to all graduates in the Class of 2026!
