Interstate 80 Construction Update for Sierra Corridor

Multiple Projects Underway with Various Lane and Ramp Closures

PLACER/NEVADA COUNTIES – Caltrans is reminding motorists of various lane and ramp closures in multiple locations along Interstate 80 (I-80) as several projects continue in Placer and Nevada counties. 


Motorists will experience delays with each project. If traveling across the entire corridor, the cumulative delay may reach up to two hours depending on traffic volumes. Caltrans encourages motorists to factor in additional travel times along the I-80 Sierra corridor and check QuickMap for real-time roadway information.


Here is the breakdown for next week in geographical order:


Eastbound I-80
  • Blue Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Applegate and Weimar, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, July 19 through Thursday, July 23. Work is scheduled to end for the week at 6 a.m. Friday, July 24.
  • Alta Pavement Improvement Project
  • At Cape Horn, various lane closures are scheduled from 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 to 8 a.m. Thursday, July 23.
  • At Magra, various lane closures are scheduled from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 22.
  • Alta Pavement Improvement Project & Monte Vista Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Gold Run and Alta, various lane and ramp closures are scheduled around the clock from 6 a.m. Monday, July 20 to 12 p.m. Thursday, July 23.
  • Monte Vista Pavement Rehabilitation Project
  • Crystal Springs on- and off-ramps are closed until further notice. Motorists will detour eastbound to Baxter and return westbound on I-80 to Crystal Springs.
  • Drum Forebay on- and off-ramps are closed until further notice. Motorists will detour eastbound to the next available exit and return westbound on I-80 to Drum Forebay.
Monte Vista Pavement Rehabilitation Project, looking eastbound along I-80 from Crystal Springs, where crews are building a new retaining wall and backfilling the roadway subgrade.
  • Blue Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project 
  • Between the Whitmore Maintenance Station and Emigrant Gap, various lane closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, July 19 through Thursday, July 23. Work is scheduled to end for the week at 6 a.m. Friday, July 24.
  • Blue Canyon Road is scheduled to be closed from 10 p.m. Sunday, July 19 to noon Friday, July 24.
  • Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project
  • Eastbound I-80 off-ramp to State Route 20 (SR 20) is closed from 6 p.m. Sunday, July 19 to 9 a.m. Thursday, July 23. Motorists will detour along eastbound I-80 to Eagle Lakes Road, then head back westbound on I-80 and take the off-ramp to westbound SR 20. 
  • Drum Forebay Drainage Restoration Project at Rainbow, various lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 20 through Wednesday, July 22.
  • Soda Springs Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Troy and Soda Springs, various lane closures are scheduled around the clock starting at 6 a.m. Monday, July 20 through noon Friday, July 24.


Westbound I-80
  • Emergency Culvert/Rockfall Project between Floriston and Hinton Road, various lane closures are scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 21.
  • Drum Forebay Drainage Restoration Project between Troy and Big Bend, various lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 through Thursday, July 23.
  • Yuba Pass Separation Overhead Bridge Project westbound I-80 off-ramp at Yuba Gap is closed until further notice due to the crossover in place. Motorists will detour westbound to the Emigrant Gap exit and return eastbound on I-80 to Yuba Gap.
