AAA Car Care Month tips give you the knowledge to avoid costly repairs

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (September 30, 2025) -  Every year, AAA responds to millions of emergency road service calls across the United States. Of those calls, the majority of vehicles required towing, were experiencing battery issues, or flat tires. During Fall Car Care Month, AAA is urging drivers to keep up with their vehicle maintenance ahead of the busy winter driving season.

“Car Care Month is a great reminder to keep up with vehicle maintenance," says John Walter, Executive Vice President, AAA Auto Repair. “If you take care of your vehicle it will return the favor. Regular maintenance can keep your car running smoothly and prevent expensive fixes down the road. Having a good relationship with your mechanic is key.”
Cars are getting older. The average age of a vehicle in the U.S. is 12.8 years, a new record. As owners aim to get more miles out of their vehicle, regular maintenance is crucial. AAA encourages drivers to be aware of these car care tips to prolong the life of their vehicle:
  • Oil Changes. Aim for an oil change every 3,000 to 7,000 miles, depending on your vehicle and driving habits.
  • Maintain Proper Tire Inflation. Check your tire pressure monthly. Proper tire pressure prolongs the life of your tires, ensures safety and improves fuel efficiency.
  • Tire Rotations. Rotate your tires roughly every other oil change. This helps prevent uneven wear and is important for safety and longevity.
  • Fluid Level Checks. Your car relies on various fluids to operate properly. Check your levels before long trips or every three months.
  • Battery Testing. Have your battery tested ahead of long trips or every three months, especially in extreme temperatures.
  • Multipoint Vehicle Inspection. Comprehensive check-ups are essential. Schedule a multipoint inspection at least once a year to catch potential problems early.
  • Visit a Trusted Mechanic: AAA Approved Auto Repair Centers are evaluated against AAA’s rigorous, industry-leading standards, ensuring that drivers receive high-quality service every time.
