Plumas Arts, Main Street Artist Gallery, and Bear Creek Frames held a Gallery Open Reception on Friday, May 3rd, from 5 to 7 PM featuring student artwork for the month of May. Plumas Arts is located at 525 Main St. in Quincy, Main Street Art Gallery is located at 432 Main St. and Bear Creek Frames is located at 367 Main St. in Quincy. Together they collaborated for the whole month of May and will be showcasing the artwork of Plumas County students from Feather River College, Plumas Charter School, C. Roy Carmichael Elementary School, Quincy Junior-Senior High School, and Portola Junior-Senior High School. The artwork is a variety of watercolors, charcoal on paper, colored pencil, acrylic on canvas, ink on cardboard, wood sculpture, mixed media sculpture, and even a hanging sculpture.
These art shows are a prelude to the third annual Lost Sierra Plein Air Art Festival. This festival will be held on May 25 in downtown Quincy at the Artist Street Fair. ‘En Plein air’ is a French term meaning painting ‘in the open air.’ This is where artists paint outside and are challenged with the rapidly changing light conditions and all sorts of weather. The founder and promoter of this festival is Mark V Reynolds, owner of Bear Creek Frames. The following information is quoted from Mark V Reynolds with his permission. "The Lost Sierra is home to a wide variety of artists. The tremendous amount of talent here is why we put together this festival. As of this writing, we have 53 participating from six states and one coming from South Africa. If you happen upon an artist, you can watch them create their masterpieces. On Saturday morning, May 25th at 8 AM the Artist Street Fair in downtown Quincy begins, then at 9 AM listen for the airhorn that will start the quick draw competition. Artists will be scattered about town and have only two hours to complete a painting. The artists will bring their wet paintings to the street fair or the award ceremony and the ‘off easel sale’ at 11:30 AM."
The Lost Sierra Plein Air Festival judge is Frank Serrano. He is a well-known artist and is considered to be one of today’s top painters of the Western landscape. He currently resides in the beautiful Owen Valley, California, near Bishop. Since 1993 he has developed his style of painting with incredible passion, capturing the dramatic atmospheric effects and stunning light that infuses the landscape of the West. His passion goes for painting beyond the studio, as he is also a teacher of the art, connecting painting workshops across the country, writing the well-known book, Plein Air Painting in Oil and producing a couple of how-to-paint Plein Air DVDs. Knowledge of painting also led to an invitation from Disney animation Studios to teach painting classes and to advise on painting techniques for 3-D film application. His paintings can often be found in collections, museum exhibitions, and galleries across the country.
On another note, on Saturday, May 18th, there will be a Plein Air painting workshop at Sand Pond near Sardine Lake. Instructor John Walker will hold the workshop from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. For registration and more information, you can email https://lostsierrapleinair.com.
