ELEPHANT FIRE UPDATE

7/29/2026

Size: 13,930 acres
Containment: 100%
Start Date & Time: July 11, 2026, 1327
Cause: Under Investigation
Location: Off Hwy 49, 2 miles northeast of Loyalton, Calif.

***THIS WILL BE THE FINAL WRITTEN ELEPHANT FIRE UPDATE UNLESS SIGNIFICANT CONDITIONS CHANGE***

CURRENT SITUATION

The Elephant Fire remains contained. There are approximately 2,200 unburned acres within the interior of the fire, which will continue to burn over the coming weeks. Fire resources remain committed to the fire to patrol and monitor fire activity until the fire is determined to be controlled and out.

As temperatures rise, fire activity within containment lines is expected to increase. The fire is burning in thick snow brush, heavy dead and down timber and standing snag patches within the 2020 Loyalton Fire scar. The fire will continue to smolder, creep and actively burn in the area as it continually consumes vegetation in the unburned green island. Smoke production will remain at moderate levels and will be visible to the surrounding communities for the next several weeks.

Since the fire is located within a burn scar there is heavy dead and down fuels. Due to these factors and steep and difficult to access terrain, firefighters are unable to safely access the active fire area.
