ELEPHANT FIRE - JULY 18 UPDATE

Location: Off Hwy 49, two miles northeast of Loyalton, Calif.

 
CURRENT SITUATION
A large portion of the fire is moving into suppression repair work. This work is based on a planned and developed by local agency specialists with the focus of mitigating long lasting impacts from the incident. Large equipment will begin moving into the area to conduct this work.
Crews remain on tactical patrol and continue to mop up on the uncontained portions of the fire. Smoke continues to be visible from the interior of the fire.
 
WEATHER
            Warming and drying had a slow start today due to morning cloud cover. Once skies cleared, however, high temperatures quickly approached the upper 80s. Increasing tropical moisture helped keep relative humidity a bit higher, closer to 20 percent in the afternoon.
            Moisture will gradually build over the coming days. Highs will reach near 90 on Sunday. Strong heating combined with increased moisture will bring potential for isolated thunderstorms all throughout the day.
 
 
INCIDENT HISTORY
            The Elephant Fire ignited near Highway 49, northeast of Loyalton, Calif. near the Sierra and Plumas County line. It is burning primarily in grass with some snags, brush and timber. The fire had moved through the 2020 Loyalton Fire scar.  Nevada IMT3 Team 1 assumed command of the incident at 8:30 on July 13th. The Fire reached 85% containment on July 17th and moving into suppression repair work.
