Don Wagner calls on Secretary of State Shirley Weber to stand up to Gov. Newsom and oppose his redistricting power grab

Newport Beach, CA -- Today, California Secretary of State candidate Don Wagner (R--Orange County) called on Governor Gavin Newsom to stand down from his scheme to have the State Legislature redraw California’s congressional districts and challenged incumbent Secretary of State, Shirley Weber, to oppose the measure.

“The people of California sent a loud and clear message when they voted to yank redistricting power away from politicians and put it in the hands of the nonpartisan commission,” said Wagner. “Gavin Newsom now wants to steal the power from the people and give it back to his cronies.”

“As California's chief elections official, Shirley Weber needs to have the backbone to stand up against the politician who appointed her to her job and to stand up for the voters. The people of California deserve at least that much from her. Shirley, you should tell Governor Newsom to respect the vote and the voters. Rigging our elections on behalf of Washington D.C. political elites is flat out wrong.”

Supervisor Wagner is a former State Assembly Member, Irvine Mayor, College Board Trustee, and Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Wagner has a distinguished career of public service and a well-earned reputation as a straight-shooter, fiscal watchdog and champion for working families, small businesses and veterans of our armed services.
