The California DMV recently announced a policy change that could make license renewals easier for many of our senior constituents. Starting October 1‚ most drivers aged 70 and older will no longer need to complete a written knowledge test when renewing their driver’s license‚ as long as they have a clean driving record. This policy adjustment aims to reduce congestion at DMV offices‚ allowing constituents who must complete in-person requirements more accessible service.
However‚ this change does not eliminate the need for an in-office visit altogether. Seniors will still need to go in for a vision test and updated photo‚ but the elimination of the written test should streamline the process.
We understand that many rural seniors in our district feel frustrated by DMV’s online shift and limited in-person options. Our office shares this frustration and continues to advocate for more equitable services that support the unique needs of all constituents.
Steps to Prepare for Renewal (Age 70+):
- Start the application online to reduce in-office time.
- Bring any required documentation and complete the vision exam and photo.
- Note: If the renewal notice mentions a knowledge test‚ it will be waived in-office.
- Those with recent accidents‚ DUIs‚ or other infractions may still need a knowledge test or take an eLearning course available in multiple languages.
