Opposes Current Spying Reauthorization Without Protections for Americans
(Washington, D.C.) –  Today, Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) voted to require the federal government to obtain a warrant to review any records of Americans that are collected or for sale by third parties. The amendment failed after a tie vote of 212-212. Without a warrant requirement for accessing any American’s record, Congressman LaMalfa opposed reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
“The domestic abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act has been well documented.  There have been over 278,000 warrantless searches of Americans’ intercepted communications by the FBI. This process has been abused to spy on countless Americans for both political, personal, and criminal reasons. Our Constitution provides bedrock protections against illegal searches and this program cannot simply be extended with a promise to ‘be better’ and a ‘trust us’ attitude. The corrupt nature of previous abuse and the non-punishment of those who did the abuse cannot be tolerated. I will not reauthorize a program that results in the illegal spying on Americans,” concluded Congressman LaMalfa.
Congressman Doug LaMalfa is a lifelong farmer representing California’s First Congressional District, including Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama and Yuba Counties.
