On October 6, 2024, at approximately 3:42 p.m., Mark McCormick, 64 of Sandpoint, ID was driving his 2013 Toyota, southbound in the #1 lane of US-395 at approximately 65 mph. It appears McCormick suffered an unknown medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the Toyota. The vehicle left the roadway and traveled onto the center median of US-395. The vehicle continued south down the median where the front of the Toyota impacted with the bank of a large drainage. After the impact, the Toyota continued to travel south, before finally coming to rest on its wheels within the center median. Passing motorists that observed the incident, called 911 and stopped to provide assistance. When the motorists contacted McCormick, he was found to be unresponsive. Numerous personnel attempted to resuscitate McCormick, but it was unsuccessful and McCormick was pronounced deceased at the scene. This incident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
