California drivers are seeing a significant increase in vehicle thefts

California drivers are seeing a significant increase in vehicle thefts during the festive season, according to FBI data analyzed by Compare the Market.
Key stats for California:
  • December 2021: 4,487 incidents per 100k
  • December 2024: 11,684 incidents per 100k
  • Total car thefts in December over 5 years: 63,470 per 100k
  • Increase between 2021–2024: 160%
Experts warn that the holiday season is the peak time for opportunist thieves targeting parked vehicles.
Adrian Taylor, Manager of General Insurance at Compare the Market:
“Not all policies cover theft. Higher levels such as Comprehensive or Third Party Fire and Theft can protect you, but lower tiers may not. It’s crucial to check your cover before the holiday season.”
