BOOK NOTES;
“The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows is a charming, feel-good book set during the aftermath of World War II London and the Isle of Guernsey; a British Island that had been invaded by the Nazis during the war. The heroine, Juliet, is a writer of a successful but ‘fluff’ series that had been used to encourage the British during the low days of the war. Over her success and wanting to prove herself as a writer, Juliet is at a loss to find subject matter that will pique her interest and be a worthwhile topic as well. Enter Dawsey, a Guernsey native who decided to write the famous author after acquiring an old book of hers on Charles Lamb and wanting more information. Mind: this is in the days before telephone usage was reliable and proper letter writing was an art. The book is compiled of correspondence between Juliet, her London & surrounds friends and family, and her growing friends on Guernsey who had secretly met as a literary society during Nazi occupation to keep them grounded. It is a novel that delves into the documented side of the occupation of the Nazis and the concentration camps but highlights the strength, endurance through such mistreatment and what length some of the bravest would go to oppose such evil. There is drama, laughter, sorrow and love with a surprise ending you will cheer!
