By Michelle Reugebrink
On our drive home from Portola on Saturday, May 9, 2026, just a few miles from Calpine, Bob and I noticed something in the field that made us both look twice. At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me; but no. There they were. Antelope.
In my 56 years of living in Sierra Valley, I have never seen antelope this close to Calpine, not once. We’ve seen them quite a lot over the last few years between Beckwourth and Highway 395, but never here in Calpine.
We pulled over and were able to capture a photo, which I’m sharing with our community. Moments like this remind me how alive this land is, how much it continues to surprise us, and how lucky we are to call Sierra Valley home.
Warmly, Michelle Reugebrink
