NANCY HARNACH of Calpine gave a presentation in Loyalton February 23rd on plant identity books and how to use them. She is shown with a 55-year-old much-loved book, Field Guide to Pacific States Wildflowers, and The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada. Nancy particularly likes the old book as it uses the “old names” of plants and features line drawings. Her collection of books includes those that organize plants by shape and/or by family.
A handout on Sierra Valley Plant Families included St. John’s wort to Figworts for tinctures and the Rose family to Violet family for tea.
☛ Did you know all parts of the cattail and Lupin family are useable; the “supermarkets” of nature?
Nancy and her late husband, Bill, were well respected for their love of botany. Nancy told how their interest in plants grew and they would spend nights poring over identifying features and scientific names.
Nancy was raised in Sattley and is a 1967 graduate of Loyalton High School.
